Completed Work, Current Project, festival, ideas, Work in Progress
The Liz Project started from a photo I took at Blissfields Festival. It sparked my interest in a set of illustrations about Queen Elizabeth. It was a group of friends at the festival all wearing the same Queen mask so I gathered them up together to shoot a group photo using a Canon 15mm fisheye lens. This was a great way to get the gang together with a smoking Liz as the focus point.
The photo spawned a number of ideas. Collecting together a few photos I took of other people made new scenarios of the Queen in different situations.

This is the photo I took at Blissfields Festival that sparked my interest in a set of illustrations about Queen Elizabeth. It was peculiar to see The Queen with a cigarette in her mouth.

The Royal Albert Hall
A 15mm fisheye photograph of the Royal Albert Hall. I was here to photograph Prince Harry arriving for a concert with Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett.
I used this snap shot as a background for The Liz Gang on a night out at The Royal Albert Hall art piece.
The Liz Gang initial sketch made on an iPad. I used the sketchpad pro software. Afterwards, I scaled it and tidied it up in photoshop.

The Liz Project is a satirical look at the state of British society using an element of humour, British institutions and the face of The Queen. This face came about after photographing a group of friends all wearing the Queen mask. They were attending the Blissfields music festival where I was working as a press photographer.
This mask was the theme throughout the project. I made various pieces of art. My ideas grew out of a collection of people in other photos. With these I made new scenarios of the Queen in different common situations. I sketched on the ipad, touched up in photoshop and the final images were screen printed into limited editions on paper.
“Liz at No10 Fancy Dress Party” - As a backdrop I used a test shot of 10 Downing street I had taken outside, as you often do while stood on Downing Street waiting for the action to happen. I just really like the unimpressed expression of the Policeman outside - a photo you keep in the creative bank. I thought it would tie in nicely as a background for The Queen attending a fancy dress party held at No. 10. She’s wearing a costume of a Great British TV character called Zippy off Rainbow. It looks like Zippy is swallowing up the person inside. I leave it up to the viewer to decide if she enjoyed the party.
I intend to revisit Liz at No.10 to do a full illustration rendering of the background too. A 2018 Brexit update. I see this piece being more relevant now than when I first made it. Worth a remix.
“Liz No Smoking” - This was inspired by a street photograph I took of a patient in her dressing gown disobeying the rules of not smoking at a Hospital. She’s on the cusp of the Hospital grounds by smoking at the gate. But I thought it was quite amusing she was under the No Smoking sign. I illustrated this scene putting the Queen in the same situation. As though The Queen was attending the NHS Hospital as a patient and taking a ciggie break. She’s wearing a gold crown insignia sovereign ring and a teddy bear dressing gown.
“The Liz Gang Knees Up at The Royal Albert Hall” - Well this is an illustration of the original photograph of the friends at Blissfields used in a scene. I thought I would take them out of the festival and put the Liz Gang outside the Royal Albert Hall after a night out at The Proms. They are wearing gang colours of red white and blue. The Union Jack colours.
I went and took some photos of the Hall for reference and took them with a fisheye lens for a dramatic background. Also the original photo was shot with a 15mm Fisheye lens so it makes it easier to stitch those scenes together and gives the correct perspective. looking into the gold fish bowl of life.
